Here are some of the basics you'll need to know when you get your new human hair wig!
Return hairs: | It's common to see some shorter hairs in human hair wigs. This is not breakage. These are called return hairs and are the short ends of the hair strands from being tied onto the cap. They can be smoothed down with a spritz of water, hairspray, or a wax stick. |
Knots: | Hair strands are individually tied onto the lace, which leaves a small knot underneath. These are usually not noticeable on light-colored wigs. On very dark colored wigs the knots can be more visible. We try to lightly bleach our knots to make them less visible, but over-bleaching knots can damage the hair and cause breakage, so this is done only when needed and very moderately. If you are bothered by any visible knots, makeup concealer or powder can be applied on the underside of the lace to help disguise the knots. Some people prefer to use flesh-colored scar tape underneath the part to hide the knots and give the scalp a realistic look. |
Color run-off: | It's normal to see some color in the water the first couple of times you wash a human hair wig. Don't be alarmed. We recommend using a gentle, color-safe, sulfate-free shampoo and cool water. |
Shedding: | Most human hair wigs will shed a bit especially when you first brush them. Minimal shedding is normal and unavoidable but does not mean the wig is defective. |
Brushing: | It's best to use a wide-tooth comb to keep the hair from frizzing, but paddle brushes can be used for a softer look. Always hold the hair at the nape and brush gently starting at the bottom few inches then work your way up. Holding the hair by the nape will help prevent hairs from being pulled out of the cap. It's best not to brush when the hair is wet, and never yank the hair in a rush. |
Washing: | How often you wash will depend on how often you wear the wig, and how much product you apply to the hair, how much you sweat, or other outside odor exposure such as cigarette smoke, etc. In general, the less often you wash the longer the hair will last. Most people wash about every 2 weeks on average. You'll be able to tell when your wig needs a wash based on product build-up and how the hair feels. Use a gentle, color-safe, sulfate-free shampoo and a good moisturizing conditioner. |
Conditioning: | When the hair feels dry, give it a deep conditioning treatment using Argan Oil, Jojoba Oil, Moroccan Oil, or natural oil of your choice, and let soak overnight in a plastic bag. You can also use hair masks, at-home keratin treatments, or any other deep conditioning treatments made for human hair. Try not to get conditioner or oils on the scalp of the wig as it can loosen the knots in the cap and cause hair loss. |
Styling: | Human hair can be styled with curling irons, waving irons, flat irons, steam curlers, blow dryers, etc. Remember, the more heat tools you use the faster the hair will become damaged. We recommend using a good heat protectant spray before using hot tools. Styling products such as mousse, gel, detanglers, and hairspray can be used but we suggest using them in moderation. These products can cause build-up on the hair weigh it down and make it look dull. |
Changing the part: | You can change the part on your wig by wetting the hair with water and using a hot blow dryer and a brush to redirect the hair where you want it parted. You can also use a metal heated comb, or the barrel of a hot curling iron to set the part and flatten any unwanted bulk. |
Daily maintenance: | It's important to keep human hair wigs hydrated. Since the hair is no longer growing out of the scalp, it's missing the natural oils that usually help keep it hydrated. Using a light leave-in conditioner spray or even just spritzing the hair with water daily is a good idea. Store your wig on a mannequin head, styrofoam head, or wig stand to keep the cap's shape. When you take your wig off at the end of the day, comb through any tangles, spritz lightly with water or conditioner spray, and hang it. If it will be hanging for an extended period of time before the next wear, keep it away from windows to avoid constant sunlight exposure, and consider covering it with a plastic bag to keep it dust-free. |
Glue or Tape: | 4x4 or 5x5 lace tops do not require any adhesive. Ear-to-ear lace front wigs like a 13x6 may need wig glue or tape to adhere the area above the ears down flat to your skin (as there are no ear tabs on those caps. If you wear your hair down, chances are you won't need to do this. If you want to pull the hair back in a clip away from the face, you may need to do this. I prefer a small piece of clear double-sided wig tape on each side. Glue or tape can also help if your lace front isn't laying flat (this can happen depending on your head size & shape). Some people prefer to use a spray adhesive like Got2b Glued, or Ebin Wonder Lace Bond spray. Always keep a wig glue remover on hand to clean off the residue from your forehead and from your lace. |
Cutting your lace: | This is simple, don't be afraid! Just use a very sharp, small pair of scissors (small cuticle scissors work well). Slowly and carefully cut along the hairline using slow smooth cuts. Take your time. How much lace to leave is a personal preference. I prefer to cut my lace just a tiny smidge past the hairline. If your wig's hairline has a widow's peak or excess hair along the sideburn area, this can easily be trimmed off to fit your look. Try on the wig first and see how your coverage lays to decide how much to cut. |
